Teaching your child to read is one of the most complicated tasks that you will do as a parent. It is not as simple as teaching your child how to walk, or to eat properly. Learning how to read needs previously known skills before a child must know. An important thing that should be remembered is that children learn in different stages. There are kids who learn fast and others later. Do not be alarmed if you child does not enjoy the things that children his age normally enjoy doing.

Children must learn basic language skills before actually learning how to read. There are children who develop these skill later than most others earlier. There are children who may have a little difficulty in learning how to speak. Others may have learning disabilities and some may have physical disabilities like having a hard time seeing or hearing. There are so many factors that may affect a child’s learning experience.

There are certain things as a parent that you may want to monitor in order to ensure that your child is progressing normally.

During infancy, you should be able to teach your child how to speak. You can also monitor the first word that you child speaks. When your child already knows how to talk, you can now teach him more words to say.

At age 3 to 4, check if your child can recall nursery rhymes. As well as communication skills, you need to make sure that your child can already comprehend the information from the books that you are reading to them.

Age 5 is when your child enter kindergarten. You child should already  know how to write words, letters and also copy the words he reads in the book.  Besides from this, you can both play word games and check if he can do well in these.

When your child enters the first grade, he will have more training in reading and writing skills. At age 6, you child must be able to teach syntax and grammar to your child. Encourage them to speak in complete sentences rather than speaking in phrases. This can further develop their communication skills. You can also buy them book s with more complicated plots or longer stories to enhance their reading skills as well as improve their vocabulary.

If you think that your child has a hard time learning how to read, there is a law which can give you services for your child. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) can give your child special speech and language therapy within your school district. They have materials provided for this kind of care. There are teacher who are given the task to help your child develop reading as well as speaking skills. The National Information Center for Children and Youth Disabilities can provide you with you rights and the programs that are available for your children.

There are certain skills essential to children and language skills are one of them. These help people to go through life and survive it. Do not be afraid if your child does not develop this skill fast, it need time and patience, as a parent. You are part of this development so make sure to do everything that you can in order to make your child learn these skills. Lastly, do not pressure your child when learning. Allow your child to get comfortable with the idea of learning how to read and actually enjoy it. Having fun is the best way a child can learn.
