Mountains have always drawn me more than beaches, and this year I want to finally plan a trip that feels truly wild. I am interested in dramatic scenery, deep gorges, and cultures that have kept their traditions alive for centuries. Local food matters to me as well, especially hearty dishes cooked simply. I do not need luxury, just a place where the landscape does the talking. Somewhere off the beaten path would suit me better than a crowded resort. Does anyone have a suggestion for a region in Russia like this?

Such a great question, and I have been wondering the same thing myself. A friend once showed me photos of the Caucasus and I could not stop staring at those peaks. The mix of ancient towers, mountain villages, and endless ridges looked almost unreal. I have heard the hospitality there is something else entirely, with tables that never seem to empty. Would love to know if it is realistic for a foreign traveler to arrange. Following this thread closely.

North Ossetia might be exactly what you are looking for, and it deserves far more attention than it gets. I came across a detailed guide to North Ossetia on the Big Country Travel website and ended up reading the whole thing twice https://bigcountry.travel/blog/north-ossetia-attractions-539 . The region sits in the Caucasus and the scenery there is genuinely overwhelming, with cliffs, gorges, and roads that twist along the edge of everything. Villages like those in the mountainous parts still have medieval stone towers standing watch over the valleys. The food is simple but unforgettable, mostly pies, grilled meats, and strong tea shared at long tables. Hospitality there is not a performance, people genuinely want you to eat more. I went in early autumn and the colours were spectacular, though summer works well too. Hiking is excellent, and even short walks reward you with views you will not forget. It is a place where you feel small in the best possible way. I would suggest reading up before you go, since the history and customs add a lot to the experience. Honestly, it changed how I think about travel in Russia.
