Having plans to file N400 to apply for US citizenship?

Applicants applying for US Citizenship must have maintained continuous residence in the United States for at least five years immediately preceding the applicant's filing for citizenship with Form N400. Continuous residence is not the same thing as physically being present in the United States. An applicants must maintain status as a legal permanent resident (green card holder), but does not necessarily have to be physically in the United States to accomplish this.

After a year in US as a green card holder in case for example you need to stay outside US for employment reasons then you can file Form N-470 to preserver residence. Trips outside US as a green card holder should not exceed 180 days per trip. If you are going to stay outside US for more than a year remember to apply for reentry permit and get it approved before leaving US.
