Post Your Articles Here / The three fruits in Triphala, with their familiar Indian names

Amla is easy to recognise in an Indian ingredient list. The other two names in Triphala can take a little more attention: haritaki (harad) and bibhitaki (baheda). Together with amla (Emblica officinalis), they make up this traditional three-fruit formula.
I prefer to keep the Hindi names beside the botanical names when making notes on a formula. It makes comparing two ingredient lists less confusing, especially when one uses harad and the other uses haritaki. For a specific example, the Alveda Triphala formula page is a reference for reading about the composition.
Recognising the ingredients does not tell us whether a formula is suitable for an individual. This is a note on the composition and names, rather than advice on taking it.
