When you log in a computer which in a network, your user account and password are checked on the central server no matter which machine you log in. A Domain Controller can also control access to files and directories which can be setup so that users have access to all their files whichever machine they log in. If you connect to a network, you need to set Active Directory Domain Controller password in a host computer which installed Windows server 2008/2003/2000. However, when we forgot/lost the domain admin password what can we do? In fact, there are many methods for resetting/recovering Windows password, but notice, most of these methods just can reset/recover Windows local administrator or standard user password. Such as :
1. Login safe mode as built-in administrator without password and via Control Panel or Computer Manage to reset their lost account password.
2. Use a password reset disk you have created for the user account password to reset the password include admin and common user password.
3. Recover Windows password with Ophcrack, Offline NT password and other recovery tools.
4. Use a system repair disc to restore system to a time point.
5. Use net user in command line and Lusrmgr.msc in Run box. And so on…
Unfortunately these methods cannot recover/reset the domain password. Now what we can do is Google for some special methods. But take it easy, I have found it for you, though it is a paid software, but I think it may be the best and easiest way to reset the domain password. Get to the point, now let us see the step-by-step guide to recover domain password with Windows Password Rescuer Advanced.
To recover Windows Server 2000/2003/2008 domain administrator/user password, follow four steps below:
step 1. Create a Windows password recovery disk.
step 2. Set the locked computer to boot from CD/DVD-ROM or USB drive.
step 3. Boot the locked computer from Windows password recovery disk.
step 4. Reset Windows 2008/2003/2000/XP/VISTA/WIN7 local or domain password.
Step 1. Create a Windows password recovery disk. 
To create a Windows password recovery disk, you must install Windows Password Rescuer Advanced edition first, and run it to burn the program to a blank CD/USB drive.

DIY a CD/DVD or USB Windows password recovery disk, just about 3 steps:
1. Insert a writable CD/DVD or a blank USB drive.
2. Select Burn to CD/DVD or Burn to USB option, and choose the drive which you inserted from the down list.
3. Click Burn button to start burning, you will successfully complete the burning in one minute.

Step 3: Boot the locked computer from Windows password recovery disk. After setting the locked computer to boot from CD/DVD-ROM or USB drive, insert Windows password recovery disk you have just created, and restart the locked computer. Wait for a moment, Windows Password Rescuer Advanced will start up and display an operation full window for you.
Step 4: Reset Windows Server 2000/2003/2008 domain user password.
1. When the operation window appears, select a Windows system you want to reset its user password.

Select target user account from users detail pane, and click Reset Password.

If the user which you want to reset its password do not appear at the list, you can use the Add User button to add it to the list, and then reset its password. Notice: In order to meet the password policy requirement, this software will set the password to Hello@2011 by default. Please remember it. Now you can click Reboot button to restart your computer. When a dialog box pop up, eject Windows password recovery disk, and click Yes to restart. Or do not eject Windows password recovery disk, Click No to cancel restarting, and then go on resetting windows password.

Tip: If you need you can click Add User button to directly add a new user to your Windows. After rebooting, you can log on your windows with new password. Is it easy? Because of the special feature of the Windows server 2008/2003/2000, also consider security, system doesn’t have a way to reset domain password itself, people have to find out a third way to complete this task. In the Type a new password hint box, type a hint for the password or not, and then click Next→Finish, and then try to log on to Windows XP again when use the new password you just set.
This USB Password reset disk only use in a certain account which you have created before, or it won’t help. So it’s better to create a password reset disk when you add a password to account.

Section Two: Reset Windows 7 password with Windows Password Rescuer run from USB drive
If you haven't created a password reset disk for your account and unfortunately you lost or forgot windows password, see bellow. I will show you step-by-step guide to do this task in several minutes with USB, without reinstalling system or losing any data.
Step 1: Prepare a 2GB USB flash drive and a computer which you can access to.
Step 2: Download Windows Password Rescuer Personal /Daos Windows 7 password recovery tool and install it to a computer which you have access.
Step 3: Run the program and burn the ISO image to the USB Flash Drive.
NOTE: This action will make your USB drive be formatted and all your data in it will be lost. You'd better provide one with nothing in it.

If you do not have a reset disk or cannot log on as an administrator, unfortunately, you may have to reinstall Windows OS and all other programs that were installed on the computer before you can use the computer again. This is for security. Without these safeguards, anyone could reset a password to anyone else's computer and gain access to private information.（from Microsoft official info)
Because of this, a lot of people think that after having lost their Windows administrator password, they absolutely have to reinstall their OS. Despite of this, now let me tell you something: They are wrong! Here some methods / utilities which can be used to recover Windows password:

Method-1

NOTE: If you never created any administrator or user accounts, this method may be unuseful, because your current account is the default administrator account.
The first thing you check if you forget login password. When we install Windows, it automatically creates an account "Administrator" and sets its password to blank. So if you have forget your user account password then try this:
1. Start system and when you see Windows Welcome screen / Login screen, press Ctr+Alt+Del keys twice and it will show Classic Login box.

2.Type "Administrator" (Without quotes, Note: Do this If you do not know any other administrator user account,) in Username box and leave Password box field blank. Now press Enter and you should be able to log in Windows.

3. Now you can reset your account password from "Control Panel -> User Accounts".

4. Pick an account you want to change.

5. Select Change the password or you can remove the password.

6. Type the appropriate information and click Change Password.

Same thing can be done using Safe Mode. In Safe Mode Windows will show this in-built Administrator account in Login screen.

Method-2

Use windows password reset disk to reset your lost password, before this you have to create a password reset disk in CD or USB Flash Drive. More details please refer to: How to create Windows password reset disk and reset your lost administrator password.

Method-3

Delete SAM files

In Windows NT / 2000 / XP, system uses SAM(Security Account Manager) to manage the safety of user account.SAM uses Security Identifier to perform Account management. The Security Identifier was create with the user account, and once you delete the user account, the SID also be deleted at the same time. One SID with only one account even if the same user name created in different time will with different SID. Therefore, once an account is reconstructed, it will be given a different SID, and won't keep the original jurisdiction. SAM perform with %System Root % system32configsam file. This file is a Windows NT / 2000 / XP user account database, all user name and password and related information can be stored in this file.

Now a solution appears: We can delete SAM file, then start system, it will rebuild a clean SAM file with no password inside.However,even if you delete the SAM, some systems will start to go wrong.

If you cannot access system as administrator or have not created a password reset disk, you can use the third method. But this method is complicated that you have to boot DOS and it will make the system in risk.

Is there another simple and efficient solution to recover the password?Answer is affirmative. Recently there are lots of windows password recovery tools on the network, but it is not every tool can solve the problem quickly. I know one of the most popular tools is Windows Password Rescuer. This program can reset the password within several minutes, and the operation is simple. It can reset password of all Windows versions, such as Windows 7,Windows XP, Windows server 2008/2003/2000 and Windows vista etc. You only need a blank CD or USB Flash Drive to complete the task.
