This type of migration is done when you want to maintain both on-prem and online mailboxes and then gradually migrate users and email to office 365. Requisites for this type of migration is that you should be on Exchange 2010 and have more than 150-2000 mailboxes and you want to migrate mailboxes in small batches and if you have Exchange 2013.
