The acquisition of citizenship and nationality by somebody who was not a citizen of that country at the time of birth is Naturalization. A foreign citizen or national after he or she fulfills the requirements established by Congress in the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) is granted U.S. citizenship by the Naturalization process.

There is an advantage if you marry US citizen (http://www.uscitizenship.info/blog/us-citizenship-and-marriage)! If you are the spouse of a US citizen and have been living with your citizen spouse for 3 years and also have had your green card for those 3 years, then you can go ahead and apply for US citizenship through naturalization process after those 3 years.
