US Passport event on March 10 to be hosted by Freeport Post Office.

On Saturday, March 10, the US Postal Service and the US Department of State will team up to promote “Passport Day in the USA 2012.” Along with the State Department’s regional passport offices, the Freeport Post Office will host a passport event for Americans planning to travel to Canada, Mexico and overseas.In addition to the familiar passport book, travelers can also apply for a passport card, which may be used for land and sea travel between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Bermuda or the Caribbean region.

Passport hours at the Freeport Post Office will be 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on March 10. No appointment is needed on that day.Normal passport hours are 8:30-3 p.m. Monday-Friday, and 8:3011 a.m. on Saturday by appointment only.

To apply for a new passport (http://www.uscitizenship.info/passport/How-to-get-a-US-Passport.jsp?pptype=newpassport) book or passport card for the first time, applicants need proof of U.S. citizenship in the form of a certified copy of their birth certificate issued by the city, county or state, or a certificate of citizenship or a naturalization certificate. Applicants will also need a valid form of photo identification, and must submit a photocopy of identification, such as a current valid driver’s license, government ID or military photo ID.
