Josh Harris Taking a Bigger Role in Commanders' Draft Plans According to Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio, Harris has been more hands-on in the Commanders’ draft process than many within the league expected. While most NFL owners are generally more involved behind the scenes than fans and media realize, Harris’ direct engagement is catching people off guard—particularly because he's relatively new to the football ownership game.
“He’s more engaged than people expected,” a source told Florio. And that engagement may already be influencing the biggest decision facing the franchise: which quarterback to select with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Harris has a strong track record in sports business—just not in actual winning. He’s been wildly successful financially:
(https://www.pinterest.com/pin/866661522046085347[/b)- Bought the Philadelphia 76ers for $280M in 2011 (now worth $4.3B)
- Bought the New Jersey Devils for $320M in 2013 (now worth $1.5B)
- Owns a major stake in Crystal Palace FC and Joe Gibbs Racing
But none of these teams have won championships under his ownership. He was the architect of “The Process” with the Sixers, a controversial multi-year tank job to rebuild the roster through the draft. And now, a similar crossroads awaits in Washington.
The Draft Decision That Could Define His Legacy With the Commanders holding the No. 2 overall pick after a 4–13 season, they are almost certain to take a quarterback—likely Jayden Daniels (LSU) or Drake Maye (UNC). Michigan’s J.J. McCarthy and Washington’s Michael Penix Jr. are also in the mix.
Interestingly, all four top QBs visited the team on the same day—a move Florio speculates was strategically timed for Harris to be present. He also met with QBs at the NFL Combine.
“It’s his team. So it’s his choice,” Florio writes. “He’ll make a decision. And once those around him sense what it is, that’s the direction they’ll go.”
That kind of sway can be powerful—and potentially dangerous—if it overrides the judgment of football minds like new GM Adam Peters (formerly of the 49ers) and new head coach Dan Quinn. Florio suggests Harris may unknowingly shape the decision just by what he says or asks, as everyone in the building tries to align with the owner's preferences.
High Stakes in D.C. The 2024 draft is a defining moment for the Commanders’ new era. If Harris hits big on a quarterback, he could be the one who finally breaks Washington’s decades-long championship drought. But if he misfires, his tenure could start with a painfully familiar script.
So, the big question is:
Will Harris be a savvy team builder—or just another meddling owner?
